‘Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present’ – Albert Camus. Connections constantly seeks to embody this notion by providing opportunities designed to make a practical difference in people’s everyday lives, giving them a better chance in life now and in the future.

Connections’ South Eastern Chances is an innovative scholarship program that provides financial support to young people living in Melbourne’s south-east, to obtain educational, cultural and social opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them.

Could you imagine being told as an impressionable teenager that your dream of becoming a doctor might not come true because you cannot afford a simple lab coat? This was the reality facing Amir*.

Amir, arrived in Australia five years ago and dreamt of being a doctor. So sure of what his future looked like, Amir completed three year 12 subjects in year 11 with limited English. However, as the years went on, he became uncertain about his future as he soon realised he could not afford a number of essential items.

Unfortunately, for many young people who face significant hardship, this is their reality. Many young people in our local community are unable to reach their full potential because their financial situation is causing them to fall through the cracks.

It is important that every young person is able to imagine what their future might look like in order for them to develop their self-esteem and sense of hope. It is also important they feel they are supported and have the right networks that believe in them, networks that will help them reach these dreams. Never is this more important than for a young person who has experienced significant disadvantage in their early years.

Thanks to Connections, Amir has been able to enrol in an extension course at Monash University (Biomedical Science), purchase a laptop and his much needed lab coat, reinstating his confidence in his future.

I really appreciate Connections’ support and kindness. It truly proves that there are people who care for disadvantaged individuals,” said Amir.

South Eastern Chances aims to unlock the potential of motivated young people like Amir, however we cannot do it alone. Can you help us give this opportunity to others?

Your donation will directly help unlock the potential of another young person in your community by giving them the opportunity to be the best they can.

No young person should be made to feel that they are disempowered by their financial situation.
